Fishing

Sitting on a full kilometer of shoreline, Black Rapids Retreat enjoys Riparian water rights to the Miramichi River, which means we have some of the best salmon fishing in Canada.

The Miramichi River is home to the famous Atlantic salmon who swim the river every year, summer through fall, inches away from our doorstep.

Black Rapids Retreat is situated on the Main Southwest Miramichi, the most productive stretch of the river for salmon. Besides Spring Kelt and Bright Salmon, New Brunswick is known for World Class Stripers (Striped Bass), is also home to Trout and Shad.

When the fish are in season

  • Striped Bass - Apr 15 to Oct 15, limit of 4 (total length of 50 to 65 cm)
  • Spring Kelt - Apr 15 to May 15, daily hook and release limit of 5
  • Bright Salmon - May 15 to Oct 15, daily hook and release limit of 2
  • Trout - May 1 to Sept 15, with a bag limit of 5 (minimum sizes: Brook Trout, 10 cm; Arctic Char, Brown Trout, Rainbow Trout, 15 cm)
  • Shad can be caught throughout the year, with a bag limit of 5 (no size limit)

Anyone can fish in the province of New Brunswick – resident or not. However, you require a license, unless the guest is under 16 years of age. To register for your license, click here.

Those from out of province are also required to have a licensed guide when fishing for Atlantic salmon.

Black Rapids Retreat has had Riparian rights to the Miramichi River for more than a century — enjoying the right to privately use the waterway as we see fit, as long as we follow the rules, and our use doesn’t interfere with the natural habitats (or our neighbours’ use and enjoyment of the waterway.)

Full fishing regulations can be found here.
